An Ode to Red Nails For Every Season
There’s just something about a woman with red nails. She holds an allure that’s hard to describe. A woman with red nails is timeless, chic, glamourous, confident, sexy, regal, flirtatious, adventurous…she is iconic. From poppy red for spring, cherry red for nails, moody red for fall, to deep romantic red for winter, there’s a shade for every season of the year. Red is a universal color that looks good on every skin tone and nail shape.
I’ve always been consistent with keeping my nails one of three colors -pale pink, dark grey, or red. Little by little, the soft pinks and trendy greys have phased their way out of my line-up, and red has claimed itself as a signature style. A red manicure instantly makes me feel like I can take on the world.
You know me, as with everything in life, I’m always seeking meaning and a story, so I spent some time researching the history of red nails. Red nails became a staple during World War II. During this era, women held highly intensive labor jobs, such as building planes and tanks. This was also the era of the feminine icon Rosie the Riveter. Rosie is the historical symbol of working women in America while preserving her feminine side with red lips and…red nails! We can thank Rosie for introducing the red nail staple in the USA.
I took some time to go through my favorite red polishes to find the best for each season ♥️
Red Nail Polish For Spring
Chanel Le Vernis in 510 Gitane // This is my absolute favorite shade. I love a classic poppy red with the slightest hint of orange for spring and summer. The balance of both warm and cool tones in this color make it vibrant without crossing the line of over-the-top. This is the color I’m wearing in the photo.
Essie in Russian Roulette // Another poppy red with subtle orange undertones that’s a classic, bright, and a bit fiercer than Gitane. This color feels like a great balance between fun and sophisticated.
Red Nail Polish For Summer
OPI in Big Apple Red // A cult favorite in the nail world. This is a go-to red all year round, but I especially love it in the summer because of how bright it is. This color is an iconic, timeless cherry red.
Chanel Le Vernis in 08 Pirate // Can you tell I love the Chanel Le Vernis formula? Pirate is a bit darker than your typical cherry summer red polish, but there’s something intriguing about this shade. The cool, matte red tone gives off a more mature vibe, perfect for those times when you need to feel a bit more put together. This color needs two coats to get the full effect.
Red Nail Polish For Fall
Chanel Le Vernis in 18 Vamp // The day that Chanel launched the shade Vamp, it sold out within hours and created a demand that was so high that it sparked a one-year waiting list. This color is stunning. It’s a deep red that could almost be black. Chanel describes it as a shade in which black and white are married to a red, garnet shade – “like the heart of a black cherry.” This shade is a great way to welcome cool, more moody temps. It could easily carry you into winter.
Essie in A-List // If you’re not ready to say goodbye to bright and vibrant summer colors, this is the perfect transition shade of red. It’s more of a cooler winter bluish-red rather than a warm summer orangey-red. It feels very regal and red carpet.
Red Nail Polish For Winter
Essie in Carry On // I’m a big fan of Essie polishes, while their polish doesn’t last as long as Chanel and Tom Ford formulas, the colors are always really unique. This shade is one of my favorites for winter and the holidays. It’s a very romantic burgundy with lots of shine. It flirts between being red and being more of a plum color. I love to add a top coat of glitter for holiday parties.
Tom Ford in Black Cherry // This is one of those shades that looks good on everyone! It’s the deepest red I’ve been able to find. If you love black nails, this is a great way to mix up your polish without going too far out of your comfort zone. It’s a deep cool-toned burgundy with a lot of shine. This is for the sophisticated girl with a hidden edge.
